Hormonal Acne, Defined
What it looks like: Hormonal acne often manifests as inflammatory acne (sometimes "deeper" cystic acne) on the chin, mouth, or cheeks. This often occurs in cyclical patterns that can be exacerbated by the menstrual cycle or other fluctuations in hormone levels.
Why this happens: Hormone levels almost always change constantly. However, some imbalances can occur in these cyclical and often painful acne outbreaks. Hormones control the sebaceous glands that produce sebum in the skin. Therefore, when certain cycles, conditions or lifestyle habits cause changes in our levels (for example, increased cortisol or testosterone levels or decreased estrogen levels), our skin can produce more sebum, causing inflammation and outbreaks. /div>
